“Once Upon a dark sea” is about the brilliance of the momentary sunset before it is gone. It is also about how we look at the world. Two hands hold the outline of a ghostly book. The book acts as a proscenium arch into another world, or story, but that world continues beyond the edges of the drawn book suggesting that it is the same world. The pages are coming to life with the reading. The contents of the book seem to be about happy moments of happy children at play. The scene of the sunset is described in the words that are stamped in paint onto the pages: “there rose a dying light”. The rose coloured children then, belong to the sunset. But all this tremendous beauty is fleeting: the light is “dying”, as it flashes over a “dark sea”.
