Star man

The Star man is titled in reference to the Long Man of Wilmington and his association with Orion on mid-winter’s night. As I was painting the Long Man in early July, hoards of people swarmed to the place asking me if I’d seen the crop circle! As I got to the centre I discovered it was a pentacle, and mused with another crop circle visitor that perhaps Orion (Long Man) had missed his dog (the red star by Orion’s heel) and so it appeared in a Wilmington field of corn in the form of a crop circle? The Downs are personified in the form of a chalk May wife. Her shirt inspired by the Berwick Pulpit by Duncan Grant, and Roland Penrose’s women of abundance that flank the Long Man/Sun of his inglenook fireplace.

I simply can’t live without this piece
